PERCEPTIONS - FOR FLUTTERBY

if i may comment on this. not because i know anything, but you stir up thoughts. this is not a critique of your life or what you say in your despatch, but rather it is about all of us. i was going to send this to your “comments”, but it became verbose.

Ok…first of all, what I understand of your first line. PERCEPTION! Perception is based on what one projects, and is what other people “think” they see, not necessarily reality or honesty …on two dimensions. For example, (and I’ll try to use me, myself) I might not be honestly projecting and you might not be perceiving correctly. The conundrum of communication. How we are perceived by others should be based on how we honestly reveal ourselves, or in my case, how I honestly reveal Christ …or not. But the most important key word is “honestly”. What you “know of authors” (as you said) is what they reveal for you to perceive. As you correctly said, one has complete control in crafting and fabricating a written piece. Such is what I do with poetry… like building cabinetry. I nail one properly dimensioned piece of lumber, perhaps pine, poplar, maple or perhaps Brazilian Rosewood… to another properly dimensioned piece. I might nail the pine to the rosewood, for “effect”. I decide on dimension and quality of wood. But all that is manufactured. In my case with my cabinets, I am using mixed species, scrap lumber and even a reconstituted wood product. But it will be PAINTED OVER! I can do that to myself also. I, as you, can portray myself to be a Shakespearian writer, if I choose… or a contemporary hippie extremist, if I choose. But I am painting myself over to “appear” to be something I am not in order for people to perceive me as I want them to.

We, (I say we because I see it everywhere and in everyone), do it in our/my Christian experience. Why? Simply because we/I do not want others to see our/my un-Christian side. Sometimes it is all too frequent, which I do not want to show for fear people will say you are not a Christian. Unfortunately…it may be true. And rather than exposing and dealing with that, I cover it up and I never resolve it. Or my ugly self only rears up in extreme, infrequent situations. For all intent and purposes, most people see me as even-keeled, mellow, at peace, humble or whatever. So if I am seen as more mature in my Christian life, then I, all the more, do not want to reveal any flaw at all. I may be trying to deal with the situation…either situations, but I struggle and don’t ask for help. Worse yet, I portray a lie, and people perceive a lie.

My family and friends do not know me in my writing or my woodshop productions. Even my wife does not know me to be the writer she reads or the craftsman who builds, because frankly, it is always a surprise to both of us. But the biggest reason why I am not recognized as such is because I do not portray myself as a “writer” or a “cabinetmaker”. I am Frank, of Noconsequence. But my wife knows the difference between Frank the sinner and Frank the Sanctified. That’s why I put her in the basement when company comes.

“Writing comes easily to me and has always been my preferred method of communication. It allows me to express my thoughts and feelings most honestly, most thoroughly, without the distraction of interjections or interruptions. It is the one, the only, thing over which I have complete control. I can easily strike a line that doesn’t say exactly what I intend, or take the extra moment to look up the perfect word to describe the situation. When I write I am free to be me”. This is beautiful. Transpose, if you will, God in your stead.

He sits down to “write” Christ on/in you. Writing comes easily to Him. It Is His Preferred Method Of Communication (The Word). You allow Him to express His thoughts, and feelings “Most Honestly”, Most Thoroughly, without the distraction of sin and self. He has “complete control”. He can easily strike a line that is not exactly what He intends, or He takes a moment to use The Perfect Word. When He writes, you are free, free indeed. I will say amen to that.
